Ionic Bonding

Ionic Bonding is the transfer of valence electrons between atoms, it is one of the 3 chemical bonds which produces two oppositely charged ions-One positive, one negative, the ions then become ionic compounds. Usually, in Ionic bonds, the metal loses its electron(s) and becomes a positive ion also known as the cation, while the non metal gains electron(s) to become a negatively charge ion also known as an anion. One example of an ionic bond is NaCl(Sodium Chloride)

The ionic compounds have strong inter-molecular forces holding it together, it is arranged into a lattice structure, and because of this the melting and boiling point of ionic compounds are very high.
